Seniors - Virtual Programming
The Knights in the Classroom have created an assortment of interactive, entertaining and memorable workshops for all ages! They are customized to the group they are working with and can be presented to a virtual or hybrid group. Since their inception in mid-2021, they have conducted over 150 workshops with tremendous success! Here are the workshops available:
• That Was Then, This Is Now - This session compares daily life today to back in ancient time especially from the perspective of an everyday person (the peasants) as opposed to how the Kings and Pharaohs lived. Little things we take for granted as well as major life events will be explored in this artifact based, interactive workshop.
• Drumming From Around the World - An examination of drumming throughout history and around the world: exploring its uses in work, warfare, rituals and entertainment. Participants will learn to drum in various styles. This is not a drumming circle and does not specifically contain First Nations content.
• Puppetry - Puppets have been used since the earliest times to animate and communicate the ideas and needs of human societies. This session will explore the uses of puppets, the art of puppeteering and have participants creating stories of purpose using a variety of puppets and techniques. Participants will get a chance to do some performing themselves should they wish to take part.
• Watercolour Painting - This session explores the ancient art of watercolour painting conducted by an visual arts instructor (and artist) with over 40 years experience. Historical significance will be explored and participants will create their own watercolour painting using whatever supplies they have on hand.
• Singing & Sea Shanties - Without electricity life is very different. Singing was a big part of everyday life, especially for those at sea. This workshop discusses the evolution of song, its various purposes and teaches participants several sea shanties and even gives them the chance to do some group song writing!
• The Art of the Court Jester - This workshop allows participants to learn the history of the Court Jester and the various skills employed by entertainers and fools throughout the world: juggling, balancing, tumbling, telling jokes and much more!
• The Armoury - This workshop has participants virtually explore armour and artifacts from various points in history. They will learn how weapons and armour were developed during ancient times and connect with history. Participants will learn about blacksmithing and building of weapons based on our first hand experiences.
